I just finished this game, and had a great deal of fun playing it. I was happy to see that they somewhat fixed their sluggish control scheme. Maybe, that's just their style. This game was, by far, better than all of the other Tomb Raider games, in my opinion. Platform: Play Station 2
"TOMB RAIDER: LEGEND" INITIAL IMPRESSIONS: This is my short review of "TRL".
This game has both excellent gameplay and superb graphics. The music is good and it has an engaging storyline, even though parts of it are ripped from the "King Arthur" myth. Add to that the excellent voice acting and "Tomb Raider: Legends" plays like an interactive movie! It is that good. Not to mention, Lara's moves and athletic abilities are truly a site to behold!
The gameplay is linear, but that doesn't bother me, because the story was good enough for me to want to keep going in the direction they were taking me. The puzzles are not very difficult to figure out, but again, I wanted to keep going with the storyline, so this didn't bother me, either. One of the things that did bother me, was that the game jumps from location to location so fast that you cannot truly enjoy the environments. The game is just too short! Even with all of this, the only real problem I had with this game was the final boss fight. It was a complete let down. Compared to the other gameplay elements, this did not take any skill and had nothing fun about it.
THE GOOD: Things they did right.
- Detailed environments and fantastic visuals.
- Great voice acting!
- Story Writing is good. King Arthur rip off, but still good.
- Level Design is Splendid.
- Excellent "Gymnastic Style" moves and animations for Lara and they are a lot of fun to watch. ( I recommend practicing, because it makes the gameplay alot more fun, when you pull off a kool move.)
- Definitely re-playable, because it is so fun to watch.
THE BAD: Things they did wrong.
- Way too short! Rent it, first!
- A little too easy, but it was so fun to watch, that it didn't matter.
- The final boss fight was a let down and is the only real problem I had with the game.
CLOSING REMARKS: This is one top notch game!
Good game designers will tell you, that you can't keep the players stuck in one area too long, otherwise they forget why they were playing the game in the first place. Specifically, they would forget about the story you are trying to tell. This game may be short, but you are having fun the whole way and you're never stuck in one place for any length of time. It was action packed and I can't wait for the next installment!
I give it an 8.6 out of 10. If it wasn't so short, I would have given it a 9. It's definitely worth renting and the re-playability (fun factor) makes it worth the purchase. Except for the ending ( Final Boss fight), this is a top notch game!
